Portrait or Personal Image - Bill Rau

I live in Castle Valley, Utah, a small community some 20 miles east of Moab. The valley is surrounded by the Colorado River on the north and the La Sal mountains on the south, with mesas, spires, and canyon walls in the other directions.

I keep busy by working on several environmental issues that threaten the landscapes of this region. Oil and gas development--with related transport infrastructure--have the potential to totally alter the region. Tar sands and oil shale extraction through strip mining are being promoted just 50 miles north of Arches National Park.

I make photos as a creative expression and as a way to support organizations working to protect the lands. My photos and those of other photographers--Tom Till, Guy Tal, Bruce Hucko--give varying impressions of how the land speaks to us.
